Originally, Koikuchi shirts were a type of underwear worn under kimonos. At festivals, people often wear a haragake, an apron-like garment, over a Koikuchi shirt and then put on a traditional Japanese jacket such as a hanten or happi coat. During the Edo period, laws regulating extravagance led people to enjoy fashion by keeping their kimonos simple while making the lining more elaborate.
Similarly, with Koikuchi shirts, people likely wore simple hanten and happi coats but enjoyed the flair of wearing flashy Koikuchi shirts underneath.
